1 dead, 1 rescued from Lake Michigan after 2 men fall from breakwall

MICHIGAN CITY, Ind. -- Indiana Conservation Officers are investigating an incident that led to one death in Lake Michigan waters Friday evening.

Officers were called to a location near a breakwall at a Michigan City Lighthouse at approximately 7:30 p.m. on a report of two male subjects falling into Lake Michigan.

The subjects fell into Lake Michigan waters after walking along the breakwall, the waves approximately 15 feet high, authorities say.

22-year-old John Hammons was able to swim back towards the breakwall, attempting to throw a life ring to rescue the other man, 20-year-old Slater Harkleroad.

Despite rescue efforts,Harkleroad of Union Mills, Indiana, did not resurface.

The U.S. Coast Guard recovered Harkleroad from Lake Michigan and transported him to Franciscan Health Hospital in Michigan City, Indiana were he was later pronounced deceased.
