16 people rescued from boat fire near Navy Pier Saturday

The Coast Guard responded to a call about a burning boat around 2:30 p.m. Saturday.

The 35-foot pleasure craft boat fire happened near the Water Filtration Plant in Chicago just north of Navy Pier.

16 people were rescued as a result of watchstanders at the Coast Guard Station at Calumet Harbor who arrived on the scene in minutes.

All 16 people, including three in the water, were transferred to Belmont Harbor by the Coast Guard. There were no injuries or medical issues.

A Chicago Fire Department boat arrived on scene to put out the fire and the damaged boat was taken to the Belmont Harbor by a commercial tow boat service.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
