19-year-old charged in Eddy Street shooting that injured two

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- A 19-year-old man is facing three charges after police say he was involved in a shooting that injured two people near Angela Boulevard and Eddy Street Commons on Sept. 19.

Anthony Michael Taylor turned himself in over the weekend and is charged with one count of battery by means of a deadly weapon, a level five felony, and two counts of criminal recklessness, a level five and six felony.

The shooting happened during a nearby Notre Dame home football game, when businesses and restaurants along Eddy Street were bustling with customers.

Kara Welling, a server at Barrio, said she was working on Eddy Street when she heard multiple gunshots.

“Brothers and Barrio were bustling with a bunch of customers, and suddenly there were multiple shots fired,” Welling said.

Welling said customers outside the restaurant immediately ran for safety.

“I was serving two tables outside on the patio,” Welling said. “One of them bolted. It was three younger customers. And then I had an older couple, and they ran inside the store.”

Two people were injured in the shooting — a teenage girl and a South Bend police officer who was struck by a ricochet, according to police.

Both victims are expected to make full recoveries.

According to the probable cause affidavit, Taylor had a firearm at the time of the shooting that was not registered in his name.

Following the shooting, businesses along Eddy Street have been required to close at midnight as part of an effort to deter crime.

Employees at Five Guys told ABC57 that the restaurant's late-night employees will instead work at the University Park Mall location, which will remain open for additional hours.

Taylor is scheduled to appear in court Oct. 21.
