3-Year-old accidentally shoots himself

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- A 3-year-old is recovering after police said he got a hold of a gun and accidentally shot himself. This all happened around 7 a.m. on 27th Avenue in South Bend.

According to police the 3-year-old is expected to make a full recovery, but neighbors say his parents need to be held accountable.

“The little boy apparently got a hold of the gun and he got shot," said next door neighbor Roberta Overmeyer.

Overmeyer lives right next door to where police say a little boy accidentally shot himself in the wrist.

“There was a police car, the fire department, and an ambulance here," said Overmeyer.

His mother told police she was asleep on the couch when she heard a bang.

“The little boy got the gun out of an unlocked safe," said Overmeyer.

Overmeyer said she hopes the little boy is okay.

“I hope he did not suffer too much pain," said Overmeyer.

But she said guns should not be around kids.

“It should have been locked up or had a gun safety on it," said Overmeyer.

That gun going off makes her nervous for her own family.

“I got a lot of grandchildren that come over and visit me and I would hate to have the bullet come off and hit one of my grandchildren," said Overmeyer.

She thinks the parents need to keep a closer eye on their kids.

“I think somebody should be held accountable as to why the three-year-old was able to get a gun," said Overmeyer.

Police said it is up to the prosecutor as to whether or not the parents will face charges.
