65-year-old man sentenced for stabbing his roommate

LA PORTE COUNTY, Ind. -- A man who stabbed and beat his roommate was sentenced to 4 years in prison with 3 years suspended, according to court records.

Michael Brewer pleaded guilty to one count of battery causing serious bodily injury and the charge of battery with a deadly weapon was dismissed as part of the plea agreement.

Brewer was sentenced to 4 years in prison with 3 years suspended and to be served on probation. He received 33 days of credit. The rest of the sentence will be served on the La Porte County Community Corrections GPS program.

In February 2021, deputies were dispatched to the 300 block of Cherry Drive in Fish Lake for a domestic disturbance.

 A deputy and conservation officer responded to the scene and located 32-year-old Calvin Swanson who had cuts and bruises and was bleeding.

Swanson said his roommate, Brewer, stabbed and beat him, reports said.

Swanson was taken to the hospital for treatment of his injuries.
