City of Elkhart set to adopt new wheel and vehicle surtax

ABC 57

ELKHART, Ind. -- City of Elkhart is set to consider collection of county wheel and vehicle surtax.

In 2025 the Indiana General Assembly passed a law that requires cities to implement a local wheel and vehicle surtax to have $1 Million in annual road maintenance funding.

“Elkhart County has collected a wheel tax since 2019 and a surtax since 2015. The State required us to transfer this tax to the city in order for the city to access a new road funding program,” Said Mayor Roberson.

The Elkhart City Council voted to advance a City wheel and vehicle surtax to second reading.

Elkhart residents are currently paying an annual $25 vehicle surtax on their vehicle, but for almost all vehicle owners the ordinance will not change the amount they pay.
