Community Build underway at Kathryn Park

NOW: Community Build underway at Kathryn Park

BUCHANAN, Mich. — One of the oldest city parks in Buchanan is getting a quick makeover.

After several years with aged-out equipment, volunteers worked with Sinclair Recreation Tuesday to set up new inclusive playground equipment at Kathryn Park.

Rich Sinclair, Vice President of Sinclar Recreation, says the disability-friendly playground equipment should be available for the next 20-25 years if properly maintained.

The park, centrally located in the heart of a neighborhood just outside downtown, received $100,000 in funding from the City Commission during their last budget.

More than a dozen local volunteers came out to help with the project, including realtors, volunteers from the fire department and community members.

While the renovations would typically take weeks to complete, thanks to volunteer help, the park is expected to be open and ready for use by 5 p.m. Wednesday.

"It's only going to take us a couple days to build this with these volunteers, which would otherwise cost significantly more if the community paid us to come in and build it for them. So, we get to work with them, and it gets done faster as well." said Sinclair.

Volunteers plan to finish the community build Wednesday. Anyone who is 16+ can participate and the work runs from 8 a.m. To 5 p.m.
