Former Beacon Health employee says workload foreshadowed upcoming job cuts

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- Beacon Health Systems released a round of upcoming job cuts in a statement released last week, but former employee Judy Nowak says she’s not surprised by the announcement.

Nowak worked in the accounting department at the headquarters in South Bend and said she felt overworked.

When she asked for additional help, she says management denied her request to hire employees.

“Those poor people in accounting are overworked,” Nowak said.

“And with them refusing to hire help, the work was just piling up; they’re rushing you to work faster and you just can’t." 

Nowak made the decision to leave Beacon Health Services last November and foresaw a round of layoffs in the near future.

Beacon Health Services said in a statement last week, “The cost of providing care rises faster than reimbursement from government and commercial insurance programs.”

ABC57 News reached out to the Beacon Health Services for additional information surrounding reimbursements and commercial insurance issues, but a representative did not supply any additional information.  

Nowak says she’s not sure what department the layoffs will affect, and ABC57 News also reached out to Beacon Health Services for more information surrounding the number of layoffs, but they did not provide any additional statements.
