ONLY ON ABC57 KICKOFF: Colts cheerleader and fiancé after on-field proposal
INDIANAPOLIS -- Indianapolis Colts Cheerleading Captain Mika Takahashi got the surprise of her life as the football team faced the Arizona Cardinals last week.
In a now-viral moment, during the first time-out in the third quarter, Mika's team secretly welcomed her boyfriend onto the field as she finished a dance routine. After hitting her final pose, she turned to see him down on one knee.
ABC57's Annie Kate spoke with the happy couple about the picture-perfect proposal.
"I remember I finished the routine, stuck the landing," Mika said. "And then someone said, like, 'Mika, turn around.' And I turned, and he was there on one knee. Tears immediately started flowing. Yeah, I had no idea that was going to happen."
That moment was captured in front of tens of thousands of fans at Lucas Oil Stadium.
"So, this is my fourth season with the Colts, in my first year as a captain. I've been a dancer my entire life, and honestly, I knew I always wanted to keep dance in my life," Mika said.
This NFL gig brought her to the Hoosier state, where she met her now-fiancé, Spencer Phillips.
"We actually met on a dating app," Mika said.
Both say it didn't take long for them to realize their relationship would be forever.
How did Spencer pull off this proposal?
"The planning actually goes back to April and May," Spencer said of the proposal.
He coordinated everything with the Colts marketing team.
"There wasn't a lot of convincing. The Colts organization and her team love Mika," he said. "So, when I asked, it was almost an instant, 'Yes, how can we do this?'"
Just like in football and cheerleading, this proposal was a team effort.
"The jersey with 'Marry Me' on the back of it actually wasn't my idea originally," Spencer said. "It was one of her teammates, and that just shows how involved they were. They decorated her locker after the game."
Seeing Spencer on one knee, Mika immediately dropped to her knees as well, nodding her head yes.
"Then the Colts ended up winning, which we can't say necessarily is because of the proposal, but I do think that the energy that we ignited in the fans was helpful," Mika said.
The Colts are currently five and one and hoping for a playoff run this year.
