Property manager gives update on future of USA Skate Center in Mishawaka

NOW: Property manager gives update on future of USA Skate Center in Mishawaka

MISHAWAKA, Ind. -- A beloved Mishawaka location is potentially in line for a second life.

The USA Skate Center on Main Street has sat dormant for nearly a decade, but that could change soon.

While a lot still has yet to be determined, one thing that is still on the table; returning this former roller skate rink to its old glory.

"When I was in high school, used to come over here over the weekend, just have fun hang out with my friends and just skate away, was some really nice nights," said Fares Farhan, property manager for We Get U Properties.

For Fares Farhan, this project carries a little extra meaning.

An Adams High School graduate, he spent plenty of time inside this building and now is a part of determining what's next at 3909 Main Street.

"There's a place in my heart for this place, everybody in Mishawaka has a place in their heart, got excited when I got the opportunity to work with some investors on this project, and just bringing back memories, everybody holds a piece of USA Skate in their heart," said Farhan.

As of now, the city of Mishawaka has said they have no update or comment on what the future holds for the former skate center.

But social media comments indicate some people still have a desire for a skating rink.

"I'd like that, that's something that I've expressed interest in, when I spoke to the investors, just from the feedback we got from the community, we sat back and decided to just look at plans from scratch and say hey, what if we did this or did this so like I said, nothing definite, we're still working with the city officials," said Farhan.

Work continues inside the building, as far as a cleanup effort goes, to get it ready for whatever may come next.

While Farhan did initially share plans for some form of shopping center, he's open to other ideas.

"We're doing the best we can to bring this back to life, we want to bring the best thing back to the city, we don't want to just do a galleria or just do a shopping center if it doesn't make sense, whatever makes sense with the city, with us, at the end of the day, got to be good for everybody, so just stay tuned and keep us posted," said Farhan.

The city of Mishawaka says there will likely be an update towards the end of June.
