Vandals hit four mausoleums at Crystal Springs Cemetery

BENTON HARBOR, Mich. -- Police in Benton Harbor are looking for the vandals who damaged multiple mausoleums at the city-owned cemetery.

The suspects prying open doors and potentially stealing valuable metal to sell for scrap.

Dealing with crime is not something cemetery manager George Rose has to deal with very often.

He says he was surprised to see not one, not two, not three, but four mausoleums at his cemetery vandalized.

"This world is going crazy, nobody has respect for the dead," said Rose.

The first couple weeks of June were memorable for Benton Harbor's Crystal Springs Cemetery, but not in a good way.

Vandals desecrated four of the cemetery's mausoleums.

They removed the doors to the monuments, defacing and damaging what is supposed to be a peaceful final resting spot.

Rose tells ABC5 57 people who walk the cemetery for exercise brought it to his attention.

That led him to find the first two damaged burial plots, before he discovered two more.

"(Their goal was) probably to sell the doors for scrap, they're brass doors," said Rose.

ABC 57 contacted Benton Harbor police and the city manager.

Neither was able to speak on camera today.
