Alleged intoxicated driver causes head-on collision

ELKHART COUNTY, Ind. – A head- on crash caused by an alleged intoxicated driver sent an 87-year-old woman to the hospital with injuries Monday afternoon.

According to the Elkhart County Sheriff’s Department, a Jeep Cherokee driven by 45-year-old Joseph Smith of Goshen veered across the center line on U.S. 20, just north of Goshen.

Smith’s vehicle crashed head-on into the Lincoln Town Car of 87-year-old Joyce Chapman who was driving in the opposite direction.

Deputies say Chapman was taken to Goshen Hospital for treatment of head injuries and abrasions.

Smith submitted to a blood draw and was found to be allegedly under the influence while driving.
