Alzheimer's patient drowns while at lake with son

VAN BUREN COUNTY, Mich. -- A 76-year-old woman drowned in Bangor Township in Van Buren County, Michigan early Sunday morning, according to the Van Buren County Sheriff's Office.

According to reports, deputies were dispatched to a home in the 66000 block of CR 376, Van Auken Lake, in Bangor Township just before 3 a.m. Monday.

A man told deputies his mother, a dementia and Alzheimer's patient, was staying with him at the lake. He said they went to bed around 10 p.m.

Around 2 a.m. he woke up and checked on his mother. He discovered she was gone.

He searched for her and found her in the water and called 911.

Attempts to resuscitate the victim were unsuccessful.

Deputies say an autopsy is being performed and the incident remains under investigation, but they believe there is nothing suspicious about the incident at this time.
