SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- Amazon announced plans to invest an additional $15 billion in Northern Indiana to build more data centers, which are said to include 1,100 new high-skilled jobs.

Officials with Amazon state the company has worked with NIPSCO to establish an energy framework that's intended to bring benefits to existing customers and strengthen Indiana’s electric grid.

The energy agreement is said to include:

  • Amazon will pay all costs associated with serving its new data center campuses. Through NIPSCO’s new subsidiary called GenCo, Amazon will pay for the use of existing NIPSCO infrastructure and fully fund the construction of any new power plants, power lines, and equipment upgrades required for the project.
  • Projected $1 billion in customer savings. NIPSCO estimates the agreement will save Indiana’s current electric customers approximately $1 billion over the next 15 years.
  • Increased grid resilience. The project will add up to 3 gigawatts of new power generation, which goes beyond serving Amazon’s needs of 2.4 gigawatts, improving grid reliability for local communities.

Amazon's newly announced investment is in addition to the $11 billion investment announced last year in St. Joseph County.

The new investment will expand Amazon's infrastructure to new sites across the state.

The new data centers will be built to support artificial intelligence and cloud computing technologies.

“This is a massive win for Hoosier ratepayers. This agreement will ensure a surplus in new energy development that will deliver real savings to Hoosier ratepayers,” said Indiana Governor Mike Braun. “Amazon’s historic investment shows that Indiana’s business-friendly climate continues to attract world-class employers and drive growth in our state. This project will create more than a thousand jobs while supporting thousands more across the region, further strengthening Indiana’s position in energy dominance and economic leadership.”
