Amtrak train hits vehicle stuck on railroad tracks

HAGAR TOWNSHIP, Mich. -- A car that was stuck on the railroad tracks was struck by a train Friday evening in the 3400 block of Pier Road, according to the Berrien County Sheriff's Office.

Deputies responded to the scene around 9:30 p.m. after a Cadillac was struck by an Amtrak train.

Deputies say the vehicle had driven off the road and gotten stuck on the tracks.

The driver got out of the vehicle before it was hit by the train.

Witnesses told deputies the driver fled from the area after it was struck, according to reports.

Deputies say the crossing lights were flashing, the crossing arms were down and the train was blowing its horn.

The Cadillac suffered extensive damage in the crash.

The train was also damaged.

There were no injuries.
