Annual 'Five Star Golf Outing' supports area youth

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- A Notre Dame basketball legend taking to the green today.

Laphonso Ellis joining the annual 'Five Star Golf Outing' on the University's Warren Golf Course.

The non-profit is based in Elkhart and focuses on changing negative mindsets among kids and getting them to make positive choices in school and in life, no matter their circumstances.

Ellis says he's happy to help such a positive program.

"Everyone makes contributions to certain things that are important to them, but when you see those things that you're investing your hard-earned dollars into, and you've seen those things have major impact, they're working and it's impacting the lives of young people, then it you leave here feeling a sense of gratification."

Ellis says since he moved to South Bend about 20 years ago, the community has always treated him like he's been here all his life, and he's happy to help the next generation thrive, just like people helped him along the way.
