Area veterans recognized for service duties

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- They served our country, but got tangled in red tape with the government.

Some Michiana vets were recognized at the Studebaker Museum in South Bend. Congressman Joe Donnelly organized the event, and said he was glad to help out.

"We owe our veterans a debt of gratitude for their service to our country," said Donnelly. “They put their lives on the line to defend our freedom, and there is no way we can truly thank them enough for that."

The family of a World War II vet finally got the medals he earned in combat, while a Vietnam vet  and the family of another man received their due payments and compensation from the government.

On Wednesday, Donnelly will hold a panel discussion for veterans at IUSB.
