Arrest made in 1988 murder
ST. JOSEPH COUNTY, Ind. – The St. Joseph County Prosecutor’s Office announced the arrest of 49-year-old Larry Guiden, aka Larry Washington, in the September 1988 murder of Mark Murphy outside the former Iceberg Lounge.
According to investigators, on September 27, 1988, Mark Murphy was shot and killed outside the Iceberg Lounge at Prairie and Indiana Avenue in South Bend.
He was taken to the hospital with gunshot wounds to the torso. He died at the hospital.
At the time of the shooting, no witnesses came forward and although they were continuing to investigate the case, there were no significant developments.
In 2013, several witnesses gave reliable information about the case to cold case investigators from the County Metro Homicide Unit.
According to court documents, Guiden, aka Larry “Dino” Washington, told another inmate he killed Murphy by hiding in the bushes across the street and shooting him when he came out.
He also allegedly told another inmate that he killed Murphy in a dispute over drugs.
Guiden has been charged with murder. He was arrested on Friday and is being held without bond at the St. Joseph County Jail.
