Arrest made in homicide investigation in La Porte County

La Porte Police Department - Breon M. Ware Mugshot

LA PORTE COUNTY, Ind. -- The La Porte Police Department reports officers responded to a medical emergency at a home in the 1400 block of Jefferson Avenue around 8:50 p.m., Sunday.

Officers arrived to find 58-year-old Aaron Stingley unconscious.

Medics treated him on scene before taking him to Northwest Health La Porte, where he was pronounced dead.

Family members alleged Stingley’s stepson, Breon M. Ware, had strangled him during an argument that evening.

Police then located Ware and took him into custody.

Ware was held on a 48-hour probable cause hold while detectives obtained search warrants for the residence.

Investigators located evidence at the scene including a shotgun that Ware reportedly possessed during the incident.

Stingley's autopsy conducted on Tuesday confirmed his cause of death as asphyxiation.

Further investigation revealed Ware has a prior conviction for a serious violent felony from 2013, which prohibits him from possessing a firearm.

Ware has been formally charged with Murder and Serious Violent Felon in Possession of a Firearm, a Level 4 Felony.

Police said this was an isolated incident, and there is no ongoing threat to the community.
