Arrest made in shots fired investigation and separate battery investigation
SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- South Bend Police made arrests in two separate investigations after discovering the subjects detained for a shots fired investigation were also suspects in a battery investigation.
Police were called to the 500 block of E. Haney on Wednesday for reports of shots fired.
During the investigation, officers located and detained the people involved.
Rahaam Oliver, 18, was taken into custody on charges of attempted battery and criminal recklessness with a deadly weapon.
Further investigation revealed Oliver and another person detained during the shots fired investigation are suspects in a battery case that happened last month. Police said the victim in the battery case was a special needs juvenile.
Oliver and the other suspect, 18-year-old Derrick Burton, were arrested on charges related to the battery case.
UPDATE: In March 2023, Burton was sentenced to one year and 182 days in jail with one year and 61 days suspended after pleading guilty to battery resulting in moderate bodily injury as part of a plea agreement. He earned 121 days of jail credit and will now serve 18 months of probation.
