Arrests made in Washington Park Beach shooting

MICHIGAN CITY, Ind. – Three people were arrested in connection with the shooting at Washington Park Beach on Memorial Day, the Michigan City Police Department.

At 4:10 p.m. on Monday, dispatch received several 911 calls reporting shots fired on the beach near Stop 2.

One person had been shot in the incident, sustaining life-threatening injuries.

Officers responding to the scene learned a tan vehicle could possibly be involved.

Officers in the area located a vehicle matching the description traveling east on Lakeshore Drive.

The vehicle continued to drive away from police despite officers’ attempts to stop it, reports said.

The vehicle eventually stopped in the 1600 block of Lakeshore Drive and a man, later identified as 18-year-old Julius Bowen of Michigan City, ran north carrying two handguns, according to police.

Bowen was caught after a brief chase. He was arrested and charged with resisting law enforcement and possession of a handgun without a license.

The driver of the vehicle, identified as 20-year-old Donald Deal of Michigan City, was arrested and charged with resisting law enforcement and operating a vehicle without ever receiving a license.

Late on Monday evening, a person of interest in the shooting turned themselves into police.

Police found probable cause to charge that person, identified as 20-year-old DeMarco Nichols of Michigan City, with aggravated battery.

Nichols was given a $25,000 bond.

Police believe this was an isolated and targeted incident.
