Athletes compete in Benton Harbor's Ironman Race

Dark clouds did not stop several serious athletes from lacing up their running shoes and hopping on their bikes early Sunday morning for the Ironman race in Benton Harbor.

ABC 57 News talked to several people who lined the streets to catch a glimpse of the athletes. The spectators said they think the participants have a lot of which to be proud.

“It’s a great sense of accomplishment. This is not an easy thing to do,” spectators Leah Steinke and Sharon Furlong said.”Not anyone can just pick up and do a race like this. That's why we're standing here watching."

The Ironman competition is not for the faint of heart. Participants had to swim 1.2 miles, bicycle 56 miles, and run 13.2 miles to complete the race.
