Baby tenrecs born at Potawatomi Zoo

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -

The Potawatomi Zoo announced five lesser hedgehog tenrecs were born on August 14.

Lesser hedgehog tenrecs are named for their resemblance to hedgehogs but they are not related.

Briar Rose and her mate Tennyson have been at the zoo for two years and are ambassador animals in the Conservation Education department.

Briar Rose is a first time mom.

Lesser hedgehog tenrecs are part of a Species Survival Plan and will be placed at other Association of Zoos and Aquariums institutions, according to officials from the Potawatomi Zoo.

Briar Rose, Tennyson and the babies are not on exhibit at the zoo but can be seen at camps, class or birthday parties or as part of the Zoo to You outreach program.
