Benham Path complete, ribbon-cutting ceremony Tuesday morning
ELKHART COUNTY, Ind. -- Elkhart city officials announced there will be a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the Benham Multiuse Path on Tuesday at 10 a.m.
The path runs from Hively Avenue, along Benham Avenue and Mishawaka Road, and ends at Old Farm Drive, and was completed as part of ASPIRE Elkhart.
Officials say the Benham Multiuse Path, in addition to enhanced lighting, is a critical addition for safer crossings, including crossings for students at Concord West Side.
For years, city officials say the Anabaptist Mennonite Biblical Seminary (AMBS) has maintained a grass walking path across their property.
Officials add that while AMBS continues to be a host and has been a key partner on the project, the grass path was insufficient for bicycles and individuals with mobility challenges.
In addition, officials say residents using the path faced an unsafe crossing of Mishawaka Road.
“Improving safety and walkability is a key part of ASPIRE Elkhart,” said Mayor Rod Roberson. “As school begins again, we are relieved to know students will have a safer route to get to class. Thank you to the seminary, our staff, the contractors, and supporters who made this multiuse path a reality.”
The ribbon-cutting will happen at the northeast corner of the intersection of Mishawaka Road and Benham Avenue.
Concord West Side Elementary will have the west side of their parking lot available for use.
Project staff and Mayor Roberson will be in attendance.
