Benton Harbor Schools avoids state takeover

BENTON HARBOR, Mich. -- After massive cutbacks and concessions by teachers, Benton Harbor Schools will not be taken over by the state of Michigan.

Just this week, the school board worked on slashing the budget to avoid the takeover.

The district is $18 million in debt.

But, on Wednesday, the Michigan Department of Education said that leaders of Benton Harbor Schools are getting the district's finances back on track on their own.
