Berrien County capable of "text to 9-1-1"

The Berrien County and the Niles City 9-1-1 call centers are now capable of corresponding with text messaging, announced the county Tuesday.

According to officials, any customer with a text or data plan provided by a wireless carrier may use the “text to 9-1-1” service.

The service may be utilized by callers who cannot speak to summon emergency services.

County officials say the location of the emergency is the most vital piece of information and users should be prepared to answer follow-up texts.

Photos and videos cannot be sent through the service at this time.

Officials remind users that calling 9-1-1 and speaking to an operator remains the best way to receive the most effective public safety response.
