Bethany Christian Schools helps to build homes for families with Habitat for Humanity in Elkhart County
GOSHEN, Ind.--- A Goshen school is looking for ways to give back to their community. And they’re doing just that by working with Habitat for Humanity in Elkhart County to help build panels for Elkhart family homes.
ABC57 went out to Bethany Christian Schools to see how they were preparing for today’s project that is happening right in the school parking lot.
More than 40 volunteers are set to build interior and exterior walls for a woman and her four children.
Sarah Lind, the school's Advancement Director, says the goal was to raise $10,000 for building materials.
To meet that goal, students and faculty made a mock home and every time the school raised $1,000 they added a piece of the wall to their mock home. The school has raised over $10,000
Lind says she’s excited to see everyone coming together to help people.
“It’s also a team building activity,” said Lind. "It’s fun to have people from these different groups of our community, who aren’t always working together on a daily basis get together.”
Anna Smucker, a fourth grader at Bethany, was one of the students who contributed to making the mock home for the fundraiser.
Smucker says she reached out to family and friends to help raise money for the Habitat for Humanity project and she’s enjoyed being a part of a cause that gives families a comfortable place to live.
“I love to help out as much as I can with big projects like this,” said Smucker.
