Blood donations needed before holiday weekend

The July 4th weekend is known as the deadliest holiday of the year, according to the National Safety Council. With that comes the demand for blood donations.

The numbers show there were 540 deaths and close to 58,000 serious injuries in 2013.

Many of those accidents resulted from drinking and driving, both in vehicles and boats.

In 2014, there were eight deaths and 11,400 injuries that occurred from mishaps with fireworks per the NSC.

To prepare for these accidents and blood demand, blood donation centers encourage people to come out and donate blood ahead of time.

As of Monday, the South Bend Medical Foundation reported that they have less than a two day supply of blood types A+, O+, and B+.
