Body of man pulled from waters of Lake Michigan at Porter Beach

PORTER, Ind. – The body of a 21-year-old man from Illinois was pulled from the waters of Lake Michigan early Monday morning.

The Indiana Department of Natural Resources says conservation officers were called to the area of Porter Beach around 5 p.m. Sunday regarding the disappearance of Alex Lopez after the kayak he was on overturned.

Emergency crews from several local agencies searched for Lopez for hours before the search was paused.

According to the DNR, the search continued Monday morning when a crews in a helicopter found a body floating in the water around 7 a.m., positively identified as Lopez.

An investigation into the incident showed Lopez and two friends were kayaking about 150 yards off the shore of Porter Beach when their kayaks overturned. His friends told DNR Officers that he went under the water and did not resurface.

Officers say Lopez was not wearing a life jacket.

The cause of death appears to be accidental drowning.
