Boone County deputy dies in the line of duty

LEBANON, Ind. -- Boone County Deputy Jacob Pickett was fatally wounded by a fleeing suspect Friday.

Officers from the Lebanon Police Department were attempting to serve a warrant on a female suspect when they noticed 28-year-old John Baldwin Jr, who they knew had an outstanding warrant as well, , according to the Indiana State Police.

When officers ordered Baldwin to stop, he and two other people got into a vehicle and drove away.

Officers chased the vehicle and a deputy with the Boone County Sheriff's Office joined the pursuit.

Around 9:40 a.m., the vehicle stopped, the occupants got out and ran from the scene.

While chasing one of the suspects, Deputy Pickett was shot, according to the Indiana State Police.

One occupant of the vehicle, 21-year-old Anthony Baumgardt, was wounded by officers.

Another, 55-year-old John Baldwin Sr., fled on foot.

The driver, Baldwin Jr., fled the scene in the vehicle. He was apprehended following a police pursuit on I-65.

Pickett was a 2002 graduate of Brownsburg High School and has been employed by the Boone County Sheriff's Office since July 2015.

Pickett's family donated his organs, ISP said.
