Buchanan senior baseball player helps win state championship, nearly forty years after his dad won it
BUCHANAN, Mi. -- The last time the Buchanan Bucks baseball team won a state championship was in 1985.
It's a day Darin Glavin-- a junior at the time-- remembered fondly.
“We were not the best team, by no means, coming out of ’85," Darin said. "We then came into the championship against Granville—another solid program. Good hitters. And with a little luck, we played really well that day up at Western. We managed to squeak one out.”
The Bucks beat out Grandville Calvin Christian 3-2 for the title, becoming the Division 3 champs-- a proud moment for all the boys on the team.
Glavin's team wouldn't win the championship the next year, however. In fact, it would be thirty-seven years before the Bucks would win the title again-- and they did it with another Glavin on the roster: Drew, Darin's youngest son, a senior a Buchanan.
“It’s been a crazy past weekend," Drew Glavin said. “Not many teams get to end their season on a win, which I was thinking about yesterday. It’s a great feeling. Ended on a good, high note.”
Darin used to joke with Drew about being on the last team to win the championship, and said he was their last chance at winning it again. Now that he helped win it again-- it's a rare accomplishment they both get to share.
"It was amazing to have that group of boys, that tight-knit group of boys take the field and win the whole thing," Darin said. "His mom and I couldn’t have been more happy.”
“It really is a dream come true," added Drew. "Once we won it, it was like a surreal moment. It made us feel—it was just awesome. Just crazy. It still is sinking in.”
Darin added that now, there will be two championship banners hanging up at Buchanan High School with the Glavin name on them.
The Bucks taking home the state title over the weekend makes them the fourth Michiana team to have won their respective state titles: The Lakeshore Lancers, Penn Kingsmen and St. Joseph High School all took home titles in a variety of different sports.
The school announced over Facebook that they will be celebrating the Bucks winning the state title on Wednesday at 8:15pm, at the Commons in Buchanan.
