Burning tree stump mixed with strong winds caused Elkhart garage fire

ELKHART, Ind.—A burning tree stump mixed with strong winds caused an Elkhart garage fire on Friday, according to the Elkhart Fire Department.

Firefighters were dispatched to a garage fire on May 8 around 1:20 p.m. in the 3000 block of Burr Oak Ave.

Heavy fire was found to be coming from the wooden frame of an unattached garage.

After cutting away the overheard garage door, firefighters found a vehicle destroyed by fire inside of the garage.

The fire was quickly extinguished, according to the fire department.

Investigation findings showed that a person had been burning away a rotten tree stump that was too close to the building when strong winds picked up the embers and started the building on fire.

No injuries were reported in the incident and the fire was ruled accidental.
