Bypass safety tips for winter weather

It’s the road drivers dread, but it doesn’t have to be unsafe.

The bypass is known for icy conditions after winter storms, but it’s INDOT’s most cared for road.

An INDOT spokesperson says the concrete material makes US 20 susceptible to black ice.

County officers say they do respond to some areas of the parkway more than others.

However, they recommend drivers stay safe on the entire stretch of road, as conditions can change quickly.

“It’s possible to go from sunshine to several inches of snow in the course of one commute,” Assistant St. Joseph County Police Chief Bill Thompson said.

Both police and INDOT recommend drivers make themselves safe first by going slowly in hazardous conditions.
