Bystander intervenes in attempted sexual assault causing suspect to flee, suspect later located
ABC 57 NILES, Mich. -- A 28-year-old man is in custody pending further investigation and charges after allegedly following and assaulting an 18-year-old woman in Niles Sunday night.
The Niles Police Department reports officers responded to the area of 9th and Decker Street for a reported assault and attempted sexual assault around 11:07 p.m., Sunday.
The 18-year-old victim told police she was attacked while walking alone after leaving a nearby restaurant.
She told investigators she had noticed a vehicle in the area earlier in the night and later observed the same vehicle following her on 9th Street near a secluded dirt road.
The victim said that's when the suspect exited the car, physically assaulted her, restricted her breathing and attempted to take her clothes off.
The victim fought back and screamed alerting a nearby man who then intervened, causing the suspect to flee the scene. As the suspect fled, he allegedly tried to strike the bystander with his car.
At the scene, police found evidence including hair, the victim's damaged cellphone, shoe impressions, and other items believed to belong to the suspect.
The Berrien County Sheriff’s Office assisted by utilizing the Flock camera system to identify a vehicle consistent with the one described by the victim.
Further video and vehicle information linked the vehicle to a similar prior incident reported in a different jurisdiction. Police then put out a "be on the lookout" for the suspect and vehicle.
A 28-year-old man was later located by the South Bend Police Department and taken into custody on an unrelated warrant.
The suspect remains at a correctional facility pending further investigation and charges.
