Car catches fire on SR 23

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- It was a close call for a father and daughter after their car caught fire.

The incident happened on S.R. 23 east of Ironwood just after 10 a.m. Thursday.

The pair said they heard a off knocking noise and pulled over.

Moments later, the tires and windshield exploded, forcing them to jump out.

"Nobody was hurt and that's the main thing," said Gregory Taylor. "You can replace a car. It's sad it happened this time of year. Times are hard enough without adding an extra burden to it."

Traffic was blocked off for a few minutes while crews worked to put the fire out.

All lanes of S.R. 23 are open.
