ELKHART, Ind. – The Elkhart County Sheriff’s Department is investigating a crash Sunday morning that resulted in injuries.
Officials say at approximately 4:07 a.m., a 2010 Mazda 3S was traveling southbound on CR 13 north of CR 24 when it veered left of the roadway striking a mailbox, telephone pole, fence and a home.
Following the crash, 29-year-old Mario Hernandez-Veyna of Elkhart, Indiana fled the accident on foot before authorities arrived on scene.
A short time later, Hernandez-Veyna was discovered by a police K9 at a residence nearby.
Hernandez-Veyna suffered non-life threatening head injuries and was transported to Elkhart General Hospital.
Hernandez was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash.
The Mazda suffered heavy front end fire damage.
The investigation is ongoing with citations pending.
Alcohol is believed to be a factor.
