Caring Connection expands trauma support for survivors

Caring Connection

BENTON HARBOR, Mich.-- A new addition is being made to the Caring Connection's Empowerment Center.

A new trauma informed interview room has been opened at the Empowerment Center's Benton Harbor office and provides an alternative space for survivors of sexual assault to share their stories in comfort.

Typically, survivors are interviewed in hospitals or law enforcement settings, which can be overwhelming and intimidating.

“Every part of the room was created with care, from the colors on the walls to the small details that make it feel warm and calm." Says Allie Remick, Co-Director of the Empowerment Center. "We wanted people to walk in and immediately feel safe.”

Inside, the room is furnished with soft lighting, comfortable seating, pillows and stress-relief items.

The trauma-informed room is designed to be utilized by survivors working with law enforcement and also during the court hearing process, offering a space that feels more compassionate and "home-like".

“Sometimes the environment can make all the difference in whether someone feels ready to talk.” Remick continues.

In addition to this new space, the Caring Connection Empowerment Center will continue to offer a full range of support for survivors of domestic and sexual violence, including a 24-hour helpline, counseling, legal advocacy, support groups, emergency shelter, and care.

Anyone seeking support can contact the Empowerment Center's 24-hour helpline at 269-925-9500.
