Multiple vehicle crash in Cass County

MILTON TOWNSHIP, Mich. -- The driver of a car that struck four cars as he was going the wrong direction on M60 has been identified. 

43-year-old Tory Miller of South Bend struck several cars in a crash at 4:16 a.m. Saturday.

Miller was taken to South Bend Memorial Hospital and is expected to recover from his injuries. 

Crews were on a crash that closed M-60 between Yankee St. and Reum St. in Cass County, early Saturday morning.

The incident happened at approximately 4:16 a.m.

According to Cass County officials, an unidentified male driver was traveling the wrong way, eastbound in the westbound lane of M60.

23-year-old Emily Oostema was traveling a box truck in the eastbound lane when she swerved to avoid a collision with the wrong-way driver. 

Oostema was struck by the alleged wrong-way driver, turning into a median where the box truck overturned on it's back.

A second semi was driven by 59-year-old Daniel Barton of Cassopolis, traveling in the right lane of eastbound M60 when he was reportedly struck by the suspect after first striking Oostema's vehicle. 

Barton's semi went off the road, overturning and dumping his payload onto a nearby farm field. 

A third vehicle was traveling eastbound on M60, driven by 28-year-old Eric Missing of Granger. Missing went over the median causing vehicle damage after attempting to avoid the wrong-way driver.

Two bystanders were able to assist the male suspect driver out of the vehicle. He was taken to South Bend Memorial Hospital for injuries sustained following the accident.

Alcohol and safety belt use are believed to be factors contributing to the crash at this time.

Dispatch confirmed the alleged wrong-way driver's vehicle caught on fire.

SMCAS Ambulance, Howard Township Fire Department, Niles City Fire Department, Life Care EMS, Pokagon Tribal Police, Ontwa Township Police and MDOT assisted at the scene.
