Cass County declares local state of emergency, one person dead following storm

CASS COUNTY, Mich. -- After severe weather throughout Friday afternoon and evening, Cass County has declared a local state of emergency, as confirmed by Cass County officials.

Per the MEC power outage report, approximately 500 homes, primarily in the Edwardsburg area, have lost power.

Emergency personnel have been deployed throughout the southern portion of Cass County following the touchdown of a tornado near Edwardsburg.

Cass County Emergency Manager, Manny DeLaRosa, confirmed multiple large structures, including homes and barns, have sustained severe damage.

Cass County Sheriff Clint Roach confirmed several injuries and one fatality as a result of the storm.

The American Red Cross was on site Friday and will return on Saturday to provide additional assistance.

Multiple fire departments and the road commission are working on tree removal and road clearing.
