Cass County car crash sends 3 to the hospital

MILTON TOWNSHIP, Mich.-- Cass County Sheriff's department responded to a two vehicle crash at the intersection of Redfield Rd and Ironwood St. in Milton Twp. around 1:07 Tuesday.

Investigation of the crash showed that a vehicle driven by 76-year-old Richard Scott turned westbound onto Redfield Rd. in front of 62-year-old Marie Purucker who was traveling eastbound on Redfield Rd. and sideswiped Scotts drivers side of his vehicle.

Scott was transported by SMCAS to Memorial Hospital in South Bend IN..

Purucker and her passenger 82-year-old Nancy Ducharme  were transported by SMCAS to St. Joseph Medical Center in Mishawaka IN.

Scott's passenger was not injured.

Alcohol is not believed to be a factor in this crash. Seatbelts were worn.

Assisting agencies were Niles Twp Fire Dept., Ontwa Township Edwardsburg Police Dept. and SMCAS.

During the crash, the only stop sign at the intersection was driven over.

That car didn't stop until landing on a neighbors front door steps, only inched from penetrating the home.

The owner of the home says he's called the Cass County Road Commission multiple times in hopes of adding two more stop signs to make it a three-way stop.

Cass County says they've only responded to two service calls at the intersection, and don't believe it warrants any change yet.

Placing a new stop sign costs between $200-$250 dollars, and the home owner believes that's a small price to pay for added safety.

“My front steps are tore up. All they have to do is put two more there and its solved half the problem because cars coming down Redfield would have to stop," said homeowner, Ray Bishop.
