Central Avenue Beach reopens at Indiana Dunes

PORTER COUNTY, Ind. – Central Avenue Beach at the Indiana Dunes National Park reopened Monday after undergoing repairs from severe erosion.

The beach has been closed since spring 2020 because of erosion caused by high lake water levels in Lake Michigan.

Central Avenue's January 25 reopening follows the efforts of the Army Corps of Engineers' sand nourishment project that placed 56,000 tons of sand on the beach.

This is the second project of this kind to be completed at the National Park in the last year.

This winter, access to the beach is down a steep and sandy slope, but park staff will restore a more gradual access path down to Central Avenue once erosion from winter and spring storms are complete.
