Charges filed against man in connection with April 2021 homicide

ST. JOSEPH COUNTY, Ind. - Charges have been filed against a man in connection with the April 2021 homicide of Olivia Carrillo on Illinois Street, according to the St. Joseph County Prosecutor’s Office.

The prosecutor’s office filed formal charges against 29-year-old Dashawn Powell, Jr., for murder, robbery and aiding, inducing or causing murder.

According to the probable cause affidavit, Powell had been making plans for a drug deal with a man who was injured alongside Carrillo.

On the night of April 27, Powell allegedly committed armed robbery at the Illinois Street home. During the robbery, a struggle broke out over Powell’s firearm as it was being discharged.

Powell left the home without his firearm. As he left, gunshots from outside the home were fired inside it, police reported.

Powell is currently in custody in another jurisdiction for unrelated offenses.

He was ordered to be held without bond until his initial bail hearing.
