Charges filed against man who was shot at Quality Inn

ST. JOSEPH COUNTY, Ind. -- The shooting at the Quality Inn on October 10 was a case of domestic violence where the alleged attacker was shot, according to court records.

Roseland Police arrived to the Quality Inn on Dixie Way in Roseland on October 10 and found Shaquwan Coalmon in the hallway near the elevators. Coalmon was taken to the hospital for treatment.

A woman told officers the shooting happened in her room. She told police she was in the room with Dakota Vancamp when Coalmon, her ex-boyfriend, texted her saying he knew what she was doing and he was on his way, according to the probable cause affidavit.

The victim has a protection order against Coalmon.

When Coalmon arrived he banged on the door and demanded to be let in. He then went to the back of the building and started banging on the window, again demanding to be let in, but the victim did not let him in, reports said.

Coalmon went to the front desk and obtained a key to the room from motel staff, police said.

Coalmon returned to the room and entered using the key.

The victim said she was behind the door when Coalmon entered the room, which caused her to fall. While she was on the ground, Coalmon kicked her in the head, reports said.

Coalmon then approached Vancamp.

Vancamp said, "Stop" or "You're going to make me shoot you," reports aid.

Vancamp had a gun in his hand as Coalmon approached him and tried to hit Vancamp in the head with a glass bottle, reports said.

The victim said she then heard one gunshot and saw Coalmon slide off Vancamp and onto the floor, according to the probable cause affidavit.

The victim called 911 and Coalmon left the room.

When police arrived, they confirmed Coalmon had a no contact order due to domestic assaults against the victim. It was a condition of his bond in one case, reports said.

Vancamp confirmed the events the victim described. He said he fired one shot but thought he had missed Coalmon. He said he pulled the trigger a second time but the gun malfunctioned, according to the probable cause affidavit.

After Vancamp shot Coalmon, he told the woman to call 911. Coalmon and the woman told him to leave.

Vancamp has previous felony charges, which means he was prohibited from carrying a firearm, according to court records.

Vancamp has been charged with unlawful carrying of a handgun and unlawful carrying of a handgun prior conviction.

Coalmon has been charged with residential entry, domestic battery, invasion of privacy, disorderly contact and domestic battery prior conviction.

Neither suspect has been taken into custody. If you have any information about their whereabouts, please contact Crime Stoppers at 800-342-STOP.
