CHICAGO—Firefighters rescued a person from Lake Michigan on Friday morning.

According to a tweet from the Chicago Fire Department, the person “apparently didn’t realize he was walking on ice.”

The rescue took place near the 5500 block of South Lake Shore Drive.

“The rescue went smoothly but the outcome could have easily been a tragedy. Avoid the ice at all costs. No ice is safe ice,” the fire department’s tweet said.

The fire department shared photos of the rescue showing first responders venturing onto the ice with a raft to assist the man back to shore.
