Chicago Sun-Times lays off nearly two dozen photographers

CHICAGO — The Chicago Sun-Times laid off nearly two dozen full-time photographers on Thursday. The company says reporters will capture many photos and videos for the news outlet on their smartphones.

The layoff includes photographers at the Gary Post-Tribune and all other Sun-Times suburban outlets.

Some believe the paper will lose more than just jobs with the photographer layoff.

"The ability to see something different. That's what makes a good photographer. Seeing what nobody else sees," said former Southtown Star photographer Matt Marton. "That's what they are giving up."

The Sun-Times released a statement saying their audience is seeking more video content and that they've had to restructure multimedia management.
