Chikaming Township celebrates new public park

NOW: Chikaming Township celebrates new public park

CHIKAMING TOWNSHIP, Ind. -- Friday morning marked the groundbreaking ceremony for the Kohn Park.

The township began the process of fundraising for the new park in April of last year.

Chikaming Township Supervisor, David Bunte, said the community supported the project in a big way by helping secure part of the $640 thousand needed for the development of the new park. The rest of the funding came from a state grant.

"This used to be an old fire station site and some vacant land that was donated back to the township by the Kohn family, demolished the old fire station, and we've been in the planning phase and fundraising phase for the past two and a half years." Said Bunte.

Bunte continues on by detailing the different amenities the new park will offer. "We'll have a children's music interactive station in the park. We've got bike repair and bike station in the park. We've got a dog refuse area and water features there in the park, a gazebo in the center for entertainers and our musicians and some community engagement activities."

The township hopes to have construction of the park completed by June, weather permitting.
