Child mauled to death by wild dogs at Pittsburgh Zoo

The Pittsburgh Zoo closed Sunday night after a three-year-old was mauled to death by wild dogs.

The boy was at the zoo with his mother when he fell 14 feet into an exhibit with 11 African painted wild dogs.

The dogs are a lot like wolves and hunt in packs.

Zoo keepers were able to get some of the dogs out of the cage and shot darts at the others but they didn't get to the boy in time.

"It is with great sadness and very, very heavy hearts that we report today that a small child was killed by our African painted dog pack," said President and CEO of the Pittsburgh Zoo and Aquarium, Barbara Baker.

The Pittsburgh zoo will remain closed until further notice while the death is investigated.
