ELKHART, Ind. -- The City of Elkhart is making moves to purchase a birthing simulation mannequin for its fire department, courtesy of a $60,000 grant from Indiana's Department of Homeland Security.
The goal is to get the fire department trained on the birthing process and the complications that often come with it.
"It will help us train on delivering babies that we don't we don't do a lot of that in the field, but we do some. So this will just give us more practice. Will also help us with maybe a breach birth and any other complications that might happen during a delivery," stated Assistant Chief of Elkhart Fire Department Kristi Sommer.
The ordinance now heads to the finance committee which will meet again on Nov. 8.
