City of Elkhart provides storm recovery update

ABC 57

ELKHART, Ind. -- The City of Elkhart released an update to their storm recovery progress on Friday.

Elkhart and AEP are continuing to respond to the impacts of a severe wind event that caused damage throughout the community and resulted in widespread power outages. City officials are working closely with AEP to assess the full extent of power outages and obtain information regarding restoration timelines. While a complete estimate of affected homes and businesses is not yet available, reports indicate outages are widespread throughout the city.

Residents are urged to exercise caution while traveling and should treat any intersection with a non-functioning traffic signal as a four-way stop. At this time, critical public safety infrastructure remains powered and operational, including Elkhart General Hospital, the Elkhart Fire Department, the 911 Communications Center, and the Elkhart Police Department. Residents are reminded to reserve 911 for emergencies only.

Residents should report non-emergency storm damage through the MyElkhart311 app, by calling 311, or online.

Downed power lines should be reported directly to AEP. There is no charge for reporting a downed power line.

Residents in need of non-emergency assistance related to storm damage are encouraged to call 211. The service can connect individuals and families with resources such as food, shelter, healthcare, and other community support services.

Despite the storm, the Rhapsody Arts and Music Festival will still take place today, with an adjusted start time of 1 p.m. instead of 10 a.m. A community resource station will be available at the Parks Department information table in Island Park, where residents can access charging stations and receive information about available support services.

ABC will update information as it becomes available.
