Coach Kelly focused on season opener

NOTRE DAME, Ind. -

Notre Dame Head Coach Brian Kelly spoke about the season opener against Texas this weekend. Kelly says he still has not named a starting quarterback for the game.

Both Malik Zaire and DeShone Kizer will play behind center for the Irish and Kelly has not given a time table for his decision.

How many reps each QB gets during the game will depend on how the Longhorns defense is playing them and how each guy responds on the field.

While the quarterbacks are getting all of the attention Kelly feels there are aspects that will have more impact on the outcome of the game.

"I feel really good about our plan defensively, how to handle Texas and what they want to do about their tempo and that we're going to run the football. Those two things are absolute certainties," said Coach Kelly.

Notre Dame is not the only team with a quarterback controversy, Texas has a QB battle on its hands as well.

And just like the Irish, the Longhorns will play both true freshman Shane Buechelle who has no experience and senior Tyrone Swoopes who has a 6-and-8 record.

But Head Coach Charlie Strong says he won't name the starter until the Longhorns run out of the tunnel Sunday.

"You've got to have someone who can win the team over and the players feels comfortable with that player and then can just manage your offense and execute the offense. We've been practicing and we've been seeing who can do that so that's what the decision is going to come down to," said Coach Strong.
